The AIthena project is making significant strides in shaping the future of Connected, Cooperative, and Automated Mobility (CCAM) through its latest public version of deliverable D6.4: Business and exploitation plan and impact. The public version of D6.4 document: “Driving Impact: AIthena’s Roadmap for AI Business Opportunities in CCAM” outlines the project’s vision for trustworthy, explainable, and accountable AI in automated driving systems.
What is AIthena project?
Funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, AIthena is bringing together leading experts to develop a harmonised methodology for AI-based CCAM solutions. The project focuses on the five pillars of trustworthy AI: accuracy, explainability, accountability, privacy and ethics. These principles will guide the development and testing of AI systems for a variety of end users, including vehicle drivers, developers, and regulatory bodies.
Key highlights from driving impact document:
- Business and exploitation plan: The document outlines strategies for optimising the practical impact of AIthena’s AI research. It emphasises the importance of collaborating with industry partners and regulatory agencies to ensure that innovations are technically robust, commercially viable and socially responsible.
- Transparency and trust: AIthena’s approach involves using Data and Model Cards, which are standardised reporting tools that provide accessible information about the data and models that power AI systems. These cards enhance transparency, support regulatory compliance and encourage the development of safer, more robust mobility solutions.
- Human-centred methodology: The project incorporates user needs, expectations and concerns into its development process. Surveys and workshops have helped to shape a methodology that prioritises explainability, ethics and privacy, ensuring that AIthena’s solutions are designed with people in mind.
Real-world applications – AIthena’s methodology is demonstrated in four critical use cases:
- Trustworthy Perception Systems for CCAM: Improving how vehicles detect and interpret their surroundings.
- AI-Extended Situational Awareness: Enhancing understanding of complex traffic scenarios.
- Human-Understandable Decision-Making: Making AI decisions transparent and trustworthy for drivers.
- AI-Based Traffic Management: Assessing the impact of automated vehicles on overall traffic dynamics.
The publication of “Driving Impact: AIthena’s Roadmap for AI Business Opportunities in CCAM” marks a milestone in AIthena’s journey to foster trustworthy AI in mobility. By sharing its findings and methodologies, the project invites stakeholders across the mobility ecosystem to join the conversation and contribute to a safer, more transparent future for automated driving.
