Get to know AIthena consortium partners – Continental

This week we introduce next AIthena consortium partner: Continental.

As a globally operating company in the development and production of passenger car and commercial vehicle systems, Continental offer an extensive portfolio in the various automotive domains such as ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), chassis, brakes, connectivity, electrification, or driveline. Radar, Camera & Lidar technologies enable a highly robust 360°-degree view around the vehicle – a precondition to realize advanced driving functions. Continental offers the latest sensor portfolio for integration into your vehicle.

As a development partner, Continental Engineering Services (CES) support you in areas that lie outside your own development scope so that you can focus on your area of expertise. You will benefit from our access to tried and tested large-series technology in the areas of systems engineering, brake and driver assistance systems, information management, interior electronics, and drive systems.

What is the role of Continental and the team in the project?

Continental main contribution will focus on Use Case 2 (UC-2 AI extended Situational Awareness/Understanding), especially on usage of Artificial intelligence (AI) in a decision-making process for autonomous vehicle. We think that our main role is to bring an industrial know-how and application development experience to complete the methodology work performed by other partners. A focus will also be done on the constraints for usage of AI in safety-critical context.

What are you currently working on in the project?

CES is currently preparing the delivery of AI-based perception stack, based on camera / Lidar fusion systems, based on existing and commercialized solutions. Once this part is delivered and integrated on other partners demonstrators – we will also work on lane change prediction algorithm, based on machine-learning approach and aiming to provide proofs of safety.

From your perspective, how do you see the contribution of the AIthena project to building trustworthy, explainable, and accountable AI-based CCAM?

AIthena project is an important step to familiarise potential users and gain confidence on AI algorithms in their daily life. We expect that the results of the project will provide a guiding direction for a larger deployment of data-driven approaches.
