The AIthena project has concluded successfully

The AIthena project concludes successfully with promising results for safer automated driving.

On 2 December 2025, the AIthena consortium partners gathered in Brussels for the final review meeting, marking the successful conclusion of this Horizon Europe funded project. Over the past three years, the AIthena project has advanced the integration of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) into Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM) solutions, ensuring transparency, robustness and trustworthiness in automated driving technologies.

The final review meeting highlighted the following key achievements across all work packages:

  • Human-centric AI methodology: Developing frameworks that embed ethical and user-focused principles in AI-driven mobility solutions.
  • Data lifecycle management: Tools are provided to ensure the secure and efficient generation and handling of data, supporting large-scale validation.
  • Explainable continuous model development: AIthena introduced innovative approaches for interpretable AI models to enhance safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Deployment and testing: Real-world and simulated use cases were demonstrated, including robust prediction modules for robo-taxis and advanced situational awareness features.
  • Communication and dissemination: Engaging stakeholders through conferences, workshops, campaigns and video materials showcasing the project’s outcomes.

The work of the AIthena consortium represents a significant step towards ensuring that automated mobility is safe, reliable and transparent, thereby reinforcing Europe’s leadership in the field of ethical AI for transportation.
